Hippocampian Scrolls: Generation Alef depicts various stages of a fictional conflict between horses and centaurs. Unlike Barakeh’s related animations–which unfold from beginning to end–the use of the grid here has a different relationship to time. Offering viewers a panoramic snapshot of the conflict, it positions viewers to pause on certain moments, thus allowing them to develop their own narratives across the grid structure.
Hippocampian Scrolls: Generation Alef, 2017; installation of 45 archival inkjet prints in three grids; 42.5 x 480 inches (installation); 13.5 x 24 inches (each print).
